Customer Reviews Analysis

Speaking as a self-described “audiophile” (but a true audiophile with deep pockets would likely laugh), this was one of the best gifts I’ve given to myself in recent years (as I have a fairly large music library of nearly 600 albums of 1/3 vinyl, 2/3 CDs and some cassettes).

Bought mine back in March–used to be $200, but when I saw it for $150 any hesitation went out the window and I grabbed it. I have been in love with it ever since. Fabulous sound and power (do you really need more than 100 watts per channel?), great remote control (not used to that, believe it or not), and it lives up to Sony quality. Powers my vintage components perfectly:

Component Connection
MCS Series 6202 Belt-Driven Turntable (had it since early 80s) Connected to Phono input
Nacamichi BX-300 Cassette Deck Connected to Input 2
Sony DVP-NS725P Disc Player (DVD but used mainly for CDs – audio-only connection) Connected to Input 3
LG TV connected via optical-to-analog adapter Connected to Input 4
KEF Reference Series 103/3 Stereo Speakers Connected to speaker terminals

Interesting observation about the way the ports are labeled on the back: what would traditionally be identified as a tape deck port (with IN/OUT) is just “Input 4,” and while it’s connected to my tape deck for playback, the REC-OUT is connected to a USB audio adapter to digitally record anything (mostly vinyl of course) to my laptop for mastering and iPod/digital library access.

The Bluetooth connectivity is awesome as well with powerful range – great for playing music from mobile devices (phone and iPod Classic with BT adapter). The front line-in 3.5 port, identified as a “Portable” is also a great feature.

At first, I was surprised that there was no input for optical, however since digital-to analog adapters are inexpensive and readily available, I think it’s best to leave it that way. Would rather have the option, rather than an optical-only port that would otherwise go unused unless one had a component that required it.

HOWEVER, if I were to make any improvements, it would be to add a USB Out port (preferably on the front), for digital recording on a PC. However again, since adapters are inexpensive and accessible, and for the price I paid for this device, I ain’t gonna complain. Front level analog balance, bass and treble controls would also be nice, but you have access to all that through the menu.

If you feel due for a simple, powerful and awesome stereo receiver/amplifier upgrade without breaking your monthly budget, this is a winner.

I bought this for two reasons…the size fit perfectly in my cabinet and it connects to my phone via Bluetooth for streaming music.

It is absolutely perfect. I am most definitely NOT a ‘tech guy’ and this couldn’t be easier to use, with ‘old school’ knobs and buttons rather than digital menus. Sounds great. Super easy to hook up and operate. Quality brand. Good price. What’s not to love?

I was pleasantly surprised with what you get, for such a low price. FM tuner, Bluetooth, Phono input with ground, 4 inputs for other components, with one of those having an output jack as well, remote control, and a 2 year parts/labor warranty from Sony.

I have a JVC turntable connected to the phono input, my television connected to input 1, a Teac cassette deck (for playback only) connected to input 2, a Sony single disc CD player connected to input 3, a Tascam CD player/recorder connected to input 4, (using the 1 and only output jack offered there) to have recording capability, and a vintage pair of Boston Acoustics 8 ohm floor speakers.

I agree with others that the speaker connection terminals have a very small opening, and not really designed for heavier gauge speaker wire. A google search provided this info: “Thick wire (12 or 14 gauge) is recommended for long wire runs, high power applications, and low-impedance speakers (4 or 6 ohms). For relatively short runs (less than 50 feet) to 8 ohm speakers, 16 gauge wire will usually do just fine.”

If you’re looking to vibrate the walls, or need to feel the bass instead of just hearing it, then you probably need to spend more, and look elsewhere. Otherwise, it really is quite nice. I’m pleased so far, and hope it will prove to be durable.

I bought this amp for $229 cd, it is an excellent value for the money and its sound quality is hard to beat even with expensive equipment. Buy it even if you do not need it 🙂

Its only shortcoming is that the speaker output binding posts are a bit small if you use large gauge wire (as you should) and need to connect a subwoofer + speakers to the same binding posts, as you must since there is no subwoofer output. In any case, this is arguably the best way to connect things up, as the subwoofer receives the same input as the speakers.

Last point, this amp. gives the best sound when you select the source direct option. i.e. play exactly what is on the recording medium.

Bought this amp to replace my Music Angel 30 wpc tube amp as it could not power my stacked Advent New Loud speakers. The tube amp is great and will be used again with better matched speakers in The future, but for now, this Sony amp is doing a great job. It has plenty of power and connects easily to my devices. The sound quality is excellent and I’m very happy with my purchase.
